Redeye Covers Fat Blogs; Kate Harding on Cover!

The Chicago Tribune's Redeye ran a cover story on fat blogs today and, sure enough, Kate Harding is on the cover! (Oh, and I'm on page 6! Even numbers rule!)

You can get the entire paper as a PDF and check it out for yourself, or grab it at one of the gazillion paper boxes in Chicago.

McAleer started the Coalition of Fat Rights Activists to organize protests and fight discriminating legislation, such as the Mississippi bill, which caused quite a stir among the fat acceptance community. In his blog, McAleer called the proposal "one of the least logical bills in modern American history."

I'm glad that one made it in.

Also noteworthy: Colleen of The Pretty Pear made it in to the piece, too, with a full sidebar! Woot!

Yay! They did a really nice job with the story. Exciting!

'Course they had to stick MeMe Roth in there. *grumble* But otherwise, a very positive piece on the fatosphere and fat acceptance in general. I love that it ended on a positive message, instead of ending it on fat = disease. And BFB got face time! Hurrah!

"A diet counselor once told me that all overweight people are angry with their mothers and channel their frustrations into overeating. So I guess that means all thin people are happy, calm, and have resolved their Oedipal entanglements."

This is nice. I especially enjoy the hyphenation of "fat-osphere."

Also, pretty funny when an attempt to provide a balanced perspective results in turning to someone like Meme Roth.

I like your quote, Paul! And I like how the article makes the salient points about fat acceptance and HAES before quoting MR, who ends up sounding (as usual) like she doesn't quite get the point.

Yeah! And no mention of "fat power" and they actually identified HAES correctly. Wow.

And Kate looks absolutely fabulous on the cover.

Good job, guys!

Oh, I didn't see the photo of Paul. He looks great, too! In fact, Paul looks a lot like my husband (same bald head and goatee) and I think my husband is hot, so...

Great job, guys. I really enjoyed reading that! Ms. Roth did come off as shrill, and the writers balanced the "You can love yourself but OBESITY OMG EPIDEEMIC DISEAZ" comments with a comment from a health professional that says you can be healthy and overweight, too. Score one for the team! You guys rock. Smiling

Ha! The photographer was sitting ON my radiator to get that shot, or that could have been the case for me, too.

Am I. . . -Yes. I do believe I'm starting to see cracks forming on the big, slimey, ball or derision we like to call Fat Hate. And, if I'm not mistaken, it seems to me that some light may be shining through.

'Course, it don't hurt to have really talented folk like Kate and Paul hammering away at said Ickyball like Titans. Me thinks the Gods begin to tremble, somewhat. [Yeah, ok. Sappy. But that's how I roll when the admiration gushes so just deal. And hand me the mop while'st your at it. Cool ]

Meme? Well, she is rather unfortunate. I'll admit that I sometimes waffle back and forth between despising and feeling sorry for her. I mean, how can you not feel sorry for someone so, obviously, twisted up inside? How badly does she REALLY hate herself during those quiet moments when the camera's aren't rolling or when some media entity isn't asking her questions like she knows. . . Well, ANYTIHNG? Then she opens her mouth and the waffle flips.

Paul, Kate, excellent job as always. Good to have you spreading the message. Good to see the message is being taken up and spread by others. And, while we're at it, just plain 'Good'.

Excellent job guys and thank you so much for posting the PDF.

Hey, as MeMe Roth quotes go, it isn't that bad.

Of course, the idea that SA is a "glorification" of obesity is reasonably stupid, and saying anyone is proposing that "obesity should be the national norm" is a straw man, to the degree that it means anything at all.

But she does say people should oppose cruelty to fat people and job discrimination. Comparatively speaking, that's progress!

So what is it with you and radiators, Paul? Do photographers just get certain poses stuck in their heads for certain people?

Paul, I must comment on the courage you show in appearing in your stocking feet. That's almost like being in a car accident and wearing the right underwear. Uh...whatever.

This is really great press for us, peeps. I hope we get more supporters on board and especially joining COFRA. Hope we'll be bursting at the seams at the meeting on Saturday. Just think: a fat rights organization that is fat with members...
