First, Do No Harm; The Body Positive

There'll be more Think Tank recaps and info over the coming days!

But I wanted to share a couple of sites you should be reading - really. First up is First, Do No Harm:

We hear constantly that we’re in the midst of an “obesity epidemic,” that fat people are burdening the health care system (or eventually will), and that being fat automatically equals ill health, even though that’s patently false. What we don’t hear are the stories of fat people being berated and shamed by health care professionals; being handed Weight Watchers brochures when they come in with strep throat; being misdiagnosed and mistreated, dismissed and dehumanized — sometimes with fatal consequences — because doctors can’t see anything but their fat.

So, inspired by sites like Hollaback, we decided to start collecting those stories in one place. This kind of thing happens every day. It’s past time we started hearing every one of these stories.

Second, The Body Positive is an excellent resource that is up for a Volvo For Life Award. There's a whopping $25,000 in it for the winner - and you can help vote. Check out the Volvo For Life site, read the nominees, and then place your vote. You can vote once per minute (!) so as they say here in Chicago, vote early and vote often.

I also recommend JunkFood Science (junkfoodscience@blogspot.com) for the real scoop on how the medical and weight loss industries skew many of the studies that newspapers and magazines like to cite when they trumpet their scary stories about the obesity "epidemic."

The writer, Sandy Szwarc, has my undying admiration for doing the tedious and eye-straining work of meticulously combing through and parsing out the real meanings of medical studies and then summarizing them in concise, understandable terms.
